, expectations are high. many more people think that obama will win this debate. the expectations are low for him. he really does. he doesn't just need to hold his own, needs to get in there and give people a reason why he looks and acts like a president in a better way than obama would. >> but michelle, there's so much doubt going that paul ryan, according to the national review, he's even calling conservative pundits to reassure them. let me read you a national review report. it writes, paul ryan has a new mission. reassuring conservative pundits. republicans familiar with the calls say ryan's tone has been positive and upbeat but he has acknowledged that the campaign has made some missteps. this is not liberal bias. this is the national review reporting. the vice presidential candidate is trying to reassure conservative pundits. >> well, conservative pundits, you know, mainstream republican, nobody has been a huge romney constituency here. you know, conservatives loved it when romney got put on the ticket. they thought this was a good sign that the romney campaign was finally going to be about

, this debate as to why president obama did not meet face-to-face with benjamin netanyahu in new york. the white house said it was a scheduling matter because the president was there early in the week. prime minister netanyahu was there the latter part of the week and they point out the two leaders talk frequently and jay carney making the point to say that a couple of weeks ago the president did speak with him by phone for more than an hour, so they're trying to show that there is this line of communication taking place here, but i think what's interesting to note is that yesterday we were tipped off about this phone call taking place today. that is quite unusual. the way this usually works is that the president has a phone call with a world leader, there is a readout that comes later on. sometimes we don't even get a readout. in fact, jay carney likes to say they don't read out every single phone call. perhaps it is indication of the pressure the white house is feeling for not having a face-to-face meeting. >> and for his part governor romney is also scheduled to have a telephone call with ben

it depends on the debate and what happens in the debate will depend on how president obama performs against him and how he comes after him. i think the president is lucky to have the unemployment numbers come out next week, after that first debate, rather than this week, before the debate, because that would give him an opening. we have seen the debates take unusual turns in the past. president ford liberated poland when debating, you remember, and jimmy carter said he talked about nuclear policy with amy, and ronald reagan said there you go again, and it changed it for ronald reagan. >> talk about that fight night. many think because of where romney is it is a make or break moment for him. i love to hear the commentators fall over themselves to compliment each other for once on the campaign trail. you have mitt romney saying the president is obviously a very eloquent, gifted speaker, david axelrod says i think the invasion of normandy took less preparation than romney putting into the debates. let's get real for a moment. who is the better debater really? >> they're both mediocre debaiters
